📚 The freedom to learn. Books open minds, challenge students and reveal our diverse world. They show children who may feel isolated or different that they are not alone and that everyone deserves respect and dignity.
👊 The freedom to teach is under attack. Educators foster a love of reading and curate engaging, enriching book collections. Sadly for their students, attempted book bans in U.S. schools and libraries have increased 20-fold in three years as education becomes a culture war battleground. Well-funded groups aim to vilify educators, break public schools and gain power at the expense of our children's education.
🛡 Protecting the freedom to learn and teach. NYSUT is advocating for two bills that would have the Regents issue guidance to ensure wide, diverse collections and would empower school librarians and staff to provide the widest range possible of age-appropriate materials for learning. They would also ensure library collections, services and programming reflect the diverse interests of their unique communities.
